MODULE 1 (Theory)

Principles of full time vs part time 4WD, soft vs hard 4WD, correct deployment of free wheeling hubs, high and low ratio use. Tyre performance, pressures, and types, including correct tyre selection for your vehicle. Use of additional traction aids such as chains, and recovery gear such as winches, high lift jacks, and snatch straps.

MODULE 2 (Practical - The steep)

Safe operation on an especially laid out steep hill course. Includes: How to get the best out of a vehicle without damaging it, hill stall/start techniques, using brakes as a traction aid, and safest techniques for driving on sidelings (avoiding rolling over). Controlled steep ascents and descents.

MODULE 3 (Practical - The slippery)

Mud or slippery surfaces, and how to achieve the optimum from the while minimising the risks and hazards vehicle without putting it through unnecessary risks. This includes the effects of various traction aids.

MODULE 4 (Practical - The deep River crossing)

Recognition of the safest, shallowest routes from water patterns, how to prepare a vehicle for water crossing, minimising the effects of water on vehicles, and how to operate a 4WD in river situations while minimising risks and hazards.
